One of the greatest horror thriller series of the decade has finally arrived on Netflix — just in time for Halloween — but there’s a catch. Although the MGM+ hit From is currently in production on its fifth and final season, only the first three seasons are available to stream on Netflix. Yet even 30 episodes are more than enough to deliver a taste of this exceptional series, making now the perfect time to add this spooky and suspenseful series to your queue.

What Is ‘From’ About?

From revolves around a nameless town where a group of survivors have become trapped and cannot escape. Although something supernatural or otherworldly has guided unwitting roadside travelers to the town, any newcomer is prevented from ever leaving. Each night, predatory creatures prey on the townsfolk. These frightening beings can mimic human form, which they utilize to camouflage their grotesque nature, luring their victims into their clutches before ripping them to shreds.

Season 1 wastes no time in introducing the town, led by de facto sheriff Boyd Stevens (Harold Perrineau), the terrifying creatures who stalk the survivors, and a family of four who become unwittingly stranded. Although the town’s biggest dangers are nocturnal, the survivors also face psychological threats during the day in the form of hostile spirits. The malevolent entities manipulate the townspeople, instilling the false hope that they might finally return home as a means of convincing them to commit atrocities against their fellow survivors.

Over its first three seasons, From familiarizes viewers with all the main players, the central conflict, and the mystery of why the survivors have become stranded. As the story progresses, the writers gradually peel back the layers of the town’s history, offering tantalizing clues through characters like Victor Kavanaugh (Scott McCord), who has lived in the town longer than any of the current survivors for reasons that gradually reveal themselves.

‘From’ Is an Excellent Character Drama

From‘s horror elements and intriguing mysteries are enough to draw you in, but the excellent characters and their interpersonal drama will keep you watching. The series features a dynamite cast led by Harold Perrineau as Boyd, who delivers incredible pathos and gravitas. As the town’s leader, he’s pushed to his emotional and physical limits to keep the survivors alive. Watching Boyd endure such hardship throughout the series while fighting to maintain his grasp on his own sanity makes for a compelling journey.

The rest of From‘s main cast give strong, grounded performances that bring gritty realism to their characters, especially Catalina Sandino Moreno as Tabitha Matthews, who is later revealed to have her own strange, supernatural connection to the town. Elizabeth Saunders brings wry wisdom to her character Donna Raines, one of the town’s pillars who delivers sage guidance to the survivors.

Your instincts, your strengths, and your particular way of thinking under pressure point to one villain you actually have a fighting chance against. Everyone else — good luck.

Jason is relentless, but he is also predictable — and that is the gap you would exploit.

  • He moves in straight lines toward his target. He doesn’t strategise, doesn’t adapt, doesn’t outsmart. He simply pursues.
  • Your ability to keep moving, use the environment, and resist the panic that freezes most victims gives you a genuine edge.
  • The Crystal Lake survivors were always the ones who stopped running in circles and started thinking about terrain, water, and distance.
  • You think like that. Which means Jason, for all his indestructibility, would face someone who simply refused to be where he expected.

Michael watches before he moves. He is patient, methodical, and almost impossible to detect — until it’s too late for anyone who isn’t paying close enough attention.

  • But you are paying attention. You notice the shape in the window, the car parked slightly wrong, the silence where there should be sound.
  • Michael’s power lies in the invisibility of ordinary suburbia — the fact that nothing ever looks wrong until it already is.
  • Your spatial awareness and instinct to map every room, every exit, and every shadow before you need them is precisely the quality Laurie Strode had.
  • You are not a victim waiting to happen. You are someone who already suspects something is wrong — and acts on it.

Freddy wins by getting inside your head — using your own fears, your own memories, your own subconscious as weapons against you. That strategy requires a target who can be destabilised.

  • You are harder to destabilise than most. You’ve faced uncomfortable truths about yourself and you haven’t looked away.
  • The survivors on Elm Street were always the ones who understood what was happening and chose to face it rather than flee from it.
  • Freddy’s greatest weakness is that his power evaporates in the presence of someone who refuses to give him the fear he feeds on.
  • Your psychological resilience — the ability to stay grounded when reality itself becomes unreliable — is exactly the quality that keeps you alive here.

Pennywise is ancient, shapeshifting, and feeds on terror — but it has one critical vulnerability: it cannot function against someone who genuinely stops being afraid of it.

  • The Losers Club didn’t survive because they were braver than everyone else. They survived because they faced their fears together, and faced them honestly.
  • You ask the questions others avoid. You look directly at what frightens you rather than turning away.
  • That directness — the refusal to let fear fester in the dark — is Pennywise’s worst nightmare.
  • It chose the wrong target when it chose you. You are exactly the kind of person whose fear tastes like nothing at all.

Chucky’s greatest advantage is that nobody takes him seriously until it’s already too late. He exploits the gap between how something looks and what it actually is.

  • You don’t have that gap. You take threats seriously regardless of how they present — and you never make the mistake of underestimating something because of its size or appearance.
  • Chucky relies on surprise, on the delay between recognition and response. You close that delay faster than almost anyone.
  • Your instinct to treat every unfamiliar thing with appropriate scepticism — rather than dismissing it because it seems absurd — is the exact quality that keeps you breathing.
  • Against Chucky, not laughing is already winning. You are very good at not laughing.

From wouldn’t be a compelling horror series without such strong characters, and the actors bring incredible empathy to their roles, heightening the suspense as the plot thrusts the townspeople into danger. Whether characters are being stalked by the town’s deadly creatures or face a moral dilemma caused by the forces controlling the town, these survivors are generally good people put in an awful situation, and they’re simply trying to find some measure of solace — or even a potential way home.

By the time Netflix subscribers get to the end of From‘s third season, there’s no doubt they’ll be hooked and ready to continue watching. The good news is that Season 5, which has been planned out from the very beginning of the show, is poised to deliver an epic conclusion to one of the best modern horror sagas on television.
