Ogun LG boss clamps down on illegal dump site in Sagamu

The Executive Chairman, Sagamu Local Government, Ogbeni Jubril Odulate, has vowed that the council will not allow the town to be used as a dumping ground for waste from other states.

Odulate made this known on Monday during an on-the-spot inspection of an alleged unauthorised dumpsite at Sotubo area of the local government.

He noted that he had received several calls and video evidences from residents complaining about trucks belonging to Lagos Waste Management Authority that were transporting waste from Lagos and dumping same at the location in Sotubo.

According to him, this has resulted into environmental degradation and created hazards to both residents and road users.

Odulate reiterated his administration’s commitment to ensure healthy living and wellbeing of the people, adding that he will not compromise with any activity or actions that are capable of endangering the wellbeing of the people.

The LG boss explained that the action was a serious breach of established authority and environmental regulations, stressing that no individual, contractor or organisations reserve the right to establish a waste disposal site without proper government authorisation.

“Our swift intervention was necessary to verify the reports, access the situation and ensure that the health, safety and environmental wellbeing of our people are not compromised,” he said.

Members of the community, Mr Folorunso Awosanya and Mrs Falilat Adekunle, expressed relief and appreciated the LG chair for his swift intervention.

They said the illegal dumping had generated offensive odour, pollution and health concerns for residents, school children and road users in the area.
