Arsenal needed a captain’s goal from Martin Odegaard to see off Hull 1-0 and ensure they head into the international break with a six-point lead at the top of the Premier League after Manchester City lost again.

Odegaard struck with 18 minutes of a tight encounter left on Saturday to make it seven home wins on the spin for the champions.

The Norwegian’s fifth goal of the season also took the spotlight away from a bizarre VAR decision involving Kai Havertz and Nobel Mendy that did not conform to the rules.

“I’m delighted with the win because to go to the international break after winning is one of the best things for a coach or for a player,” said Gunners boss Mikel Arteta.

“I think regarding the performance we were the better team. I think we had enough chances and situations to make the scoreline much bigger.”

Liam Delap’s emphatic brace earned Nottingham Forest a first home win of the season and piled the misery on Manchester City with a 3-1 victory.

Delap scored in either half after Jair Cunha had given Forest an early lead as City lost for the third Premier League game in a row.

This victory could be a coming of age for both Delap and Forest, who had struggled to adapt to life under new boss Oliver Glasner, with just one win from their opening nine games.

The results sends Manchester United, who play on Sunday, into the bottom three and spelled doom for rivals City too.

City found themselves 2-0 down inside 20 minutes, but did threaten a comeback when Rayan Cherki scored early in the second half.

But they slipped to a third loss on the bounce and amid the backdrop of the ongoing appeal against Premier League charges, their season is showing signs of falling apart.

Noah Okafor stepped off the bench to snatch Leeds three points as they beat Tottenham 1-0 at Elland Road to snap their five-game winless Premier League run.

Okafor struck with his first touch, two minutes after replacing Lukas Nmecha, to seal Leeds’ third league win of the season and condemn resurgent Tottenham to their first defeat in five.

The Londoners were chasing their fourth straight win, but in a game of few clear-cut chances Okafor’s introduction proved decisive.

Jacob Murphy’s wonderful late strike was not enough to earn Newcastle victory at Craven Cottage, with Rodrigo Muniz levelling minutes later to earn Fulham a deserved 1-1 draw.

Only an outrageous save in stoppage time from Lukas Hornicek kept Newcastle’s Matthias Jaissle from witnessing his team lose for the fifth time this season, Ryan Sessegnon the player denied a stunning goal from range.
