Fans of Eric Roberts in Runaway Train and Leonardo DiCaprio in Shutter Island (2010) cannot miss this psychological thriller driven by character drama, in which a novelist's marriage and mind come apart under pressure.
Richard Sykes is an accomplished novelist who is stuck. He has no concept for his next book, and his marriage to Haley is falling apart. Searching for a way out, he turns to the people around him, friends and colleagues, in an effort to overcome the demons that could either make him or break him. The deeper he goes, the harder it becomes to tell what is real. His old friend and agent, Nick, becomes the last connection to the world outside Richard's head. It is a thriller in which the danger is not a gunman but a man's own perception.
Psychological thrillers in the vein of Shutter Island, directed by Martin Scorsese in 2010, rely on an unstable point of view that makes the audience question every scene. The Perception takes that approach on a smaller scale and with a more intimate focus, putting a troubled marriage and a creative crisis at the center of the story. It is less about action than about tension, with a main character whose suspicions drive the plot and who may be his own worst enemy.
The Perception was directed by Jensen Noen. Nick Bateman, known for The Matchmaker's Playbook, stars alongside Eric Roberts, an Academy Award nominee for Runaway Train who played the mobster Sal Maroni in The Dark Knight. The cast also includes Soren McVay, Sandi Gardiner, Elena Ghenoiu and Vicky Illk.
The Dark Knight, directed by Christopher Nolan, earned Heath Ledger a posthumous Oscar for playing the Joker, and Eric Roberts appeared in it as Sal Maroni, a Gotham mob boss. Roberts, the brother of Julia Roberts, has hundreds of credits across film and television and received an Oscar nomination for Runaway Train. Here he joins a smaller story, where the suspense comes from the main character's own head rather than from a criminal underworld.
For viewers who like mind-bending thrillers, tense marriage dramas and stories where the biggest threat comes from the inside, this film delivers a slow-burning, character-driven experience.
