Fans of Dog Day Afternoon, The Outfit, and Blue Ruin cannot miss this claustrophobic movie, an atypical entry in the heist canon that prioritizes human stakes over the score itself..
Set in 2004 Belfast, the story dramatizes the high-stakes coercion of two bank employees, Richard Murray and Barry McKenna, who are forced into an uneasy alliance after their families are taken hostage. Richard, a rigid bank manager played by Eddie Marsan, and Barry, a carefree vault-key holder portrayed by Eanna Hardwicke, must navigate a grueling day-long ordeal to extract millions from the Northern Bank vault while under the watchful eye of their security chief, Mags Fulton.
The narrative eschews the typical glamour of the heist genre, focusing instead on the psychological erosion of ordinary men trapped between the ruthlessness of their kidnappers and the oppressive reality of their workplace.
Director Colin McIvor crafts a grounded thriller that operates as a hybrid of the heist and tiger-kidnapping sub-genres. By focusing on characters from disparate social strata—upper management versus maintenance—the film explores themes of class resentment and forced equality under duress. Eddie Marsan delivers a masterclass in repressed anxiety, while Eanna Hardwicke provides a volatile emotional counterpoint. The presence of Michelle Fairley adds a layer of stoic tension, representing a world of protocol that becomes a lethal obstacle for the protagonists. Thematically, the film critiques the fragility of domestic safety and the cold mechanics of capitalist institutions.
Historically, No Ordinary Heist contributes to the resurgence of North Irish true-crime cinema, drawing inspiration from the real-life 2004 Northern Bank robbery. Unlike contemporary blockbusters that favor kinetic action, McIvor leans into a gothic, muted aesthetic that mirrors the city's damp, grey atmosphere.
