Denver Nuggets just gave the rest of the West a massive break by trading Peyton Watson in a multi-team deal. However, among those teams, the Dallas Mavericks look like the biggest winners of a move that made a top contender worse overnight.
The complex five-team trade sent 23-year-old Peyton Watson to the Cleveland Cavaliers on a four-year, $88 million sign-and-trade agreement. In return, Denver acquired Cleveland’s unprotected 2031 first-round pick, a 2032 second-round selection, and forward Julian Reese.
Watson put together a massive breakout campaign last season, averaging 14.6 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 2.1 assists on 49.1% shooting. He provided Denver with significant two-way depth at both forward positions before a severe hamstring injury sidelined him for the remainder of the season.
Rival contenders look to capitalize on the roster shakeup, and the Mavericks can get the most advantage from Watson’s move.
The Nuggets have long been a premier championship threat built around Nikola Jokic. However, by trading Watson, they sacrificed immediate wing depth and two-way upside for future draft picks.
Analysts widely agree this move made Denver worse overnight. Sam Quinn branded the transaction a D- grade move for Denver, penning, “At this point, I’m not even sure it’s fair to consider the Nuggets fringe contenders… It’s a sad decline for a team that once had dynastic potential.”
Moreover, Watson was Denver’s best defensive wing and could guard multiple positions. Without him, the Nuggets lack depth at small forward and power forward.
Meanwhile, Dallas has versatile forwards like rookie Cooper Flagg and an explosive scorer like Kyrie Irving, but Denver no longer has the defensive players to stop them.
Denver’s thinner bench makes this head-to-head matchup far more balanced. This gives the Mavs a realistic, immediate shot at advancing out of the group stage and making a tournament run
