DANBURY – When it comes to girls soccer in the SWC, one team stands above the rest.
Notre Dame Prep successfully defended its conference title on Sunday, defeating Pomperaug 4-0 at Western Connecticut State University for its fifth SWC title in six years.
“We just keep getting good players that come to the school, and it is all about the players,” Notre Dame Prep coach Wayne Mones said. “They want to play for us, they want to learn and they want to get better. If they want to be a champion, they come to Notre Dame.”
Notre Dame Prep has reached the SWC championship game in six straight seasons, only losing in 2024 to Brookfield.
Lancers goalie Cara Williams was named the tournament MVP after posing three shutouts, not allowing a goal in the tournament. Notre Dame Prep outscored opponents 11-0 in the three games.
“I feel really great, I honestly couldn’t do this without my teammates,” Williams said. “They always help me get better and this just feels really good.
“This really shows how great we are. Wayne (Mones) is a great coach, he strives to win. And all of these girls are so determined, from my freshman year to now it is amazing how much we have succeeded.”
Junior forward Kolbe McCray scored a pair of goals in the championship game, while Maria Rocha Reaes and Truth Houston also scored.
McCray scored the second and final goal for the Lancers.
“It is fun, being a forward and getting to score (in a championship game), I enjoy it,” McCray said. “My team makes it fun for me too, they know how to move the ball and they always find me. I am proud of everybody, and I am proud to do it for my team.”
Pomperaug reached its first SWC championship game since 2018 by defeating Newtown in penalties in the semifinals.
Notre Dame Prep will now turn its attention to the CIAC Class LL tournament, hoping to reach its first final since 2023.

“That has been our staple all year, we have only allowed four goals on the season. Our defense has been great and Cara Williams, our goalie, has been great. But offensively we have done well also, we score a lot of goals.” – Wayne Mones
