Notre Dame flip targets makes change but not in Irish’s favor

Despite an aggressive late push, Notre Dame lost out on Karnell “Greedy” Williams to the LSU Tigers after he flipped from the Texas Longhorns on Thursday afternoon.

Williams, a 6-foot and 175-pounds defensive back is ranked as the No. 24 safety and the No. 282 player overall in the 2027 class according to the 247Sports Composite. The defensive back committed to Texas on December 3, 2025 however continued to take visits after and Notre Dame and LSU both emerged as potential final landing spots for him.

Notre Dame had entered the picture later than Texas, having offered this past February but it appears the pitch had been resonating. He had told Mike Roach of 247Sports (subscription required) that “they (Notre Dame) have an amazing coaching staff. Coach (Marcus) Freeman is a head coach like no other.”

Ultimately it was a relationship with former Longhorns head coach Lane Kiffin that won out the battle.

For Notre Dame, Williams’ recruitment shows that the program has built so much momentum lately that they can go into a state like Texas and give top SEC teams an honest battle for one of their own. Irish fans can’t wallow for too long however, Notre Dame currently has the No. 2 class in the 2027 cycle and it is only a matter of time before Marcus Freeman and defensive backs coach Aaron Henry set their sights on a new target.
