Ben Stokes has a way of making headlines even when he’s watching from the couch, and Tuesday evening in Southampton was no exception.
After Harry Brook dismantled Sri Lanka with an unbeaten 114 off 49 balls at The Rose Bowl, Stokes took to social media to say something that’s going to be debated across English cricket for a while: whether Brook has more talent than Kevin Pietersen, one of the most naturally gifted batters England has ever produced.
England captain Brook walked out and simply took Sri Lanka apart. Ten fours, six sixes and in one over off left-arm spinner Dunith Wellalage he smashed six boundaries to take down Sri Lanka’s bowling attack. The partnership with Jos Buttler was equally breathtaking as the duo put up a 128-run stand in 60 balls to inspire England to 254 for four in 20 overs.
Sri Lanka’s reply never looked like getting close. They were bundled out for 135, with Sonny Baker, on his home ground at Hampshire, taking 3 for 12 on his white-ball international debut. His performance led England to a comprehensive 119-run win, putting the Three Lions 1-0 up in the three-match series.
Brook’s century was his first in 18 international innings across formats, the previous one had come in the T20 World Cup final against Pakistan in February, and ranked as England’s joint second-fastest in T20 history.
Stokes wasn’t simply gushing about a good innings, but he was responding to criticism, specifically the wave of commentary directed at Brook for not scoring a Test century in over a year. It was that pile-on that pulled Stokes out of observer mode.
“I don’t even think the genius of KP could come close to what Harry Brook has talent-wise,” he wrote on X. “Is it really that hard to just sit back and admire these players for what they are, on the good days and the bad days, and stop berating them for doing things that we would never, ever, ever even think of doing because we simply aren’t on their level to think that way? You are an absolute freak, Harry. You’re mint to watch.”

He subsequently acknowledged the comment might have been a touch strong on Pietersen, who was watching from the stands in his new capacity as England’s white-ball mentor, and softened the framing slightly. “Bit harsh on KP actually; both are freak talents but Brook better IMO is my point,” he added.
However, Brook was more eager to talk up the unusual schedule as he’d just come off a Test whitewash of Pakistan a few days earlier to playing T20I cricket against another Asian giant.
“An exceptional performance and I am proud of how the boys went about every aspect of the game tonight. It is not the ideal schedule,” he opined. “But we managed to mentally prepare for this game and this series. I thought the performance tonight was near-perfect.”
Stokes dropping Kevin Pietersen’s name into a comparison with Brook is a deliberately provocative move, and it’s done the intended job of sparking a conversation. Whether you agree or not almost doesn’t matter, but what the debate reveals is that Brook has crossed a threshold. You don’t get compared to KP unless people think you belong in that tier.
The comparison is imperfect because Pietersen was a different kind of player in a different era, and comparing generations always produces more heat than light. But as a statement about ceiling, Stokes’ point has merit.
Brook’s ability to access the ground in ways most batters can’t even imagine, combined with that astronomical strike rate, puts him in a category that very few English batters in history have occupied. Pietersen was in that category. Whether Brook ultimately lives up to the full weight of that comparison depends on what his next decade looks like, Test centuries included. For now, the argument is alive and probably should be.
