Josiah Sturdivant is back on the board. The 2027 EDGE out of Wake Forest (N.C.) has backed off his commitment to Rutgers and reopened his recruitment. Sturdivant committed to Greg Schiano and the Scarlet Knights on May 30, but after more than three months in the class, the 6-foot-3, 225-pound defender has decided to go in a different direction.
The decision comes as Rutgers has opened the 2026 season with consecutive losses. The Scarlet Knights dropped their opener to UMass before falling 28-21 at Boston College on Friday night, leaving Rutgers at 0-2.
Sturdivant now plans to take a step back and evaluate his options rather than quickly jumping into another commitment.
The No. 14 prospect in North Carolina will reopen communication with programs and see which schools emerge as serious options during the fall.
There has been some communication with South Carolina and Vanderbilt, two programs worth monitoring as his recruitment resets. Others could soon enter the picture.
For now, however, Sturdivant isn’t working with another decision date in mind. He wants to see which programs increase their interest, continue building relationships and potentially get him back on campus before determining his next move.
Sturdivant has shown plenty of production off the edge. As a junior in 2025, he recorded 51 tackles, 18.5 tackles for loss and eight sacks while forcing a fumble.
That production, combined with his 6-foot-3, 225-pound frame, gives programs another intriguing EDGE prospect to evaluate as the 2027 cycle moves toward its final months.
