No meaningful development can take place without security – PDP’s Adebutu

The 2027 governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Ogun State, Oladipupo Adebutu, has opined that until the insecurity challenges facing the country are tackled, no talk of development can make sense.

Adebutu noted that without the safety of lives and property, prosperity cannot exist, stressing that security occupies the first place in his agenda.

He made the remarks at a media parley held on Monday in Abeokuta, the state capital, where he appreciated the media for their “critical role” in shaping public accountability and democratic development.

Adebutu lamented that journalists are operating in “one of the most difficult periods” globally, particularly in Nigeria, and called for greater sacrifice across sectors in the face of the country’s economic and governance challenges.

“This is not a good time for journalists in the world, particularly in Nigeria. The problem facing Nigeria today is insecurity. That is why security occupies the first position on our agenda.

We cannot build a prosperous society without ensuring the safety of lives and property.”

He urged journalists to continue to uphold fairness in their reporting, particularly as the country approaches the 2027 general elections, warning that political communication would become more intense and potentially divisive.

In her remarks, veteran journalist and the party’s deputy governorship candidate, Lateefah Yemi Sowunmi-Kolapo, stated that the media remains the most important realm in their journey.

She implored journalists to continue to be fair in their reportage, remain unbiased, and refuse to be intimidated.

According to her, fair reporting would help to stabilise the political environment and strengthen democratic participation.

Also speaking, Iyabo Obasanjo, the Ogun Central Senatorial candidate for the party, insisted that the party will work for the progress of the people.

Iyabo argued that while the state is known as the industrial capital of Nigeria, the impact and effect is not felt by the people.

She urged the media to remain consistent in holding political actors accountable, especially as the country moves closer to another election cycle.

The former commissioner for health also expressed confidence in the PDP, describing her association with the party as a reflection of her belief in its capacity to deliver electoral success.

Meanwhile, the chairman of the party, Abayomi Tella, asserted that the PDP of yesterday is back, better, and alive.
