“No Clarification Was Needed”: WNBA Analyst Backs Sophie Cunningham After Fever Guard Blames Media For Ongoing Women’s Sports Discourse

Since Sophie Cunningham made her remarks on transgender athletes in women’s sports, she has been asked by reporters to clarify her comments. For one WNBA analyst, this is completely unnecessary.

On Wednesday, Robin Lundberg tweeted his support for the Indiana Fever guard by arguing that the media response to her remarks has blown things out of proportion.

“Order of operations: Sophie made comment in article. Sophie asked to clarify when no clarification was needed. Media member hijacked presser based on like 15 people outside. Sophie leaned into it all. Pundits pushed issue endlessly. Sophie trying to tamper it down.”

Lundberg’s tweet comes on the heels of Cunningham criticizing the media as she spoke to reporters at the Fever’s practice session.

“The WNBA media, all we ever do is cover everything except basketball…You can talk about other things. Those are great stories. It shows fans who people are outside the court. I also think we gotta keep the main thing, the main thing.”

Whether she intended to or not, Cunningham triggered a conversation that went beyond basketball when she talked about wanting to protect female athletes in sports where transgender athletes should supposedly be barred from competing.

Though Cunningham and her supporters are frustrated with how media coverage has fixated on the issue of transgender athletes, the raging discourse online doesn’t appear to be dissipating any time soon.

Interestingly, Sophie Cunningham has the platform of mainstream media this season, as she is a guest contributor to USA Network’s WNBA coverage.

Appearing on USA Network’s studio show on Wednesday, Cunningham clarified the values that she upholds above all.

“I know that people are not always going to align and agree…But I think the most important thing is having that respect, having that love, and pursuing peace in these conversations.”

Cunningham also doubled down on her opinion that the high-quality basketball being played in the WNBA has been “overshadowed” by other narratives.
