NEWTOWN – The Newtown and Southington football teams both rolled to victories in Week 1, scoring 99 points between them in the type of games that pad records but leave plenty of questions unanswered.
Friday night was to be the real measuring stick as the two met in a Connecticut High School Football Alliance contest, but Southington picked up right where it left off, jumping on Newtown early and piling on from there in a 42-26 win that showed why the Blue Knights are ranked No. 5 in the GametimeCT Top 10 poll and turned the measuring-stick game into a mismatch.
“We executed in the first quarter and went up 21-zip,” Knights receiver Walker Mierzejewski said. “We prepared all week and it paid off.”
Southington led 42-14 at halftime.
Newtown scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns to make the final score more respectable, but this one was all Southington.
For the Blue Knights, Jacoby Roman threw four touchdown passes, three of which went to Mierzejewski for scores of 57, 32 and 67 yards.
Nick Andrews added two scores, one on a 15-yard pass from Roman and one on a 55-yard punt return.
Ben Beaulieu also scored on a 15-yard run.
“The goal is 1-0 every week and we checked it off,” Southington coach Rob Levesque said. “It was ugly at times, brilliant at times and our playmakers really shined. Walker had a great night and did a lot of really, really good things.”
Newtown got three touchdown passes from Jack Colonel, two to Cam Kullgren and one to Max Malitsky.
Newtown coach Dan Farina was not available after the game.
Southington will travel to Windsor next Thursday at 6 p.m., while Newtown will travel to Pomperaug next Friday for a 6:30 p.m. game.
