NLC declares indefinite FCT strike over teachers’ promotion dispute
It maintained that teachers were recruited to perform teaching duties and should therefore be considered for advancement when they meet the required conditions, rather than having their progression determined by the availability of vacant positions.
The NLC also accused the FCT Administration of seeking industrial peace without first resolving what it described as unfair treatment of teachers.
It argued that lasting industrial harmony could not be achieved while the issues remained unresolved, stressing that justice must precede peace.
Following the expiration of the ultimatum without a resolution, the council directed workers throughout the FCT to stay away from their workplaces from October 7 until further notice.
The directive covers both public and private-sector workers, making the action broader than a dispute involving only government-employed teachers.
The NLC appealed to residents of the territory, particularly parents, to understand the impact of the strike, while calling on civil society organisations and other concerned Nigerians to intervene.
The union urged stakeholders to pressure the FCT Administration to address its grievances in order to prevent further disruption to education in the territory.
It further warned that the action should not be viewed as a short-term warning strike, insisting that it would continue indefinitely until its demands were addressed.
“The strike will be total and indefinite,” the council declared.
As of press time, the FCT Administration had not issued a public response to the NLC’s declaration of the indefinite strike.
