Eagles’ Jalen Hurts Reacts to Losing Trusted Protectors Amid Offensive Slump

Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles are not having the start to the season they had hoped for. The current record for the franchise is 2 wins and 2 losses. They lost the Week 4 game to the Los Angeles Rams with a score of 24-20, despite having a big lead at halftime.

The Eagles are now facing an even more uncertain situation with key players leaving, and Hurts has shared has shared his feelings regarding it.

The Eagles have recently had to handle the sudden departures of two starting offensive linemen. Right tackle Lane Johnson announced his retirement on October 6, 2026. He spent 14 seasons in the NFL, all of them with the Eagles. He made the decision to retire as he wanted to prioritize his mental health and family. The following day, the team traded center Cam Jurgens to the Baltimore Ravens in exchange for a 2027 fifth-round pick and a 2028 second-round selection, while sending a 2027 seventh-round pick.

Hurts addressed both departures during his most recent weekly media availability. He admitted that he was having difficulty addressing these changes midseason and said, “You can’t replace what we’ve done and all the things that we’ve accomplished together, the memories. I’ve got a lot of love for Lane and Cam, and I have a lot of gratitude and appreciation for the time that we spent together, the games we played together, the adversities we’ve overcome, and so I wish them nothing but the best with my sincerest heart.”

The quarterback was very close with Johnson, playing his entire NFL career with him. He further added, “It’s a different thing for me to process in the middle of the season as a player. I think as a person, I wish to see him smiling again. I wish to see him happy and at peace, and that’s what I sincerely wish for him. So as a player, hard to … not hard to process, but really hard to focus on, considering the urgency that I have to win.”

Hurts also talked about the remaining players in those position remaining.

Hurts expressed his confidence in the remaining younger linemen. He said, “Yeah, they’re some funny guys. Funny, hungry, younger guys to say the least. So, you know, it’s a lot to be excited for in that sense. You get the opportunity to go out here and play.”

He added, “I know they’re very hungry. I know they’re excited for the opportunity to come, whatever that looks like. And at the end of the day, you want all hands on deck in it. So we’re going to commit to that, commit to one another, and go out here and fight.”

With two key departures, the Eagles will depend on younger talents like Markel Bell, Drew Kendall, and Willie Lampkin. The Eagles will now look towards their next game, which is against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
