Nigeria urges UN Security Council to enforce sanctions on nuclear weapons proliferation

President Bola Tinubu has called on the United Nations Security Council to impose sanctions to curb the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

President Tinubu’s position was conveyed by Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, at a meeting in New York to mark the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons.

The President said Nigeria’s security does not depend on nuclear weapons and called for enhanced regulation of such weapons.

He stressed the need to respect the UN Charter and commended African leaders for keeping the continent free of nuclear weapons testing.

“We must thank African leaders for their efforts in ensuring that the continent remains free of weapons testing and the production of weapons of mass destruction,” Tinubu said.

President Tinubu noted that with more than 12,000 nuclear warheads globally, the world must commit to peace and total disarmament.
