Nigeria retains top spot in Africa as 89 students secure EU Erasmus scholarship

Representing the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Prof. Abdullahi Ribadu, the Director of Students at the commission, Dr Chinelo Nwosu, commended the European Union for its sustained investment in Nigeria’s education sector and human capital development.

She encouraged the scholars to remain focused throughout their studies and return to support Nigeria’s growth through the knowledge and expertise they acquire overseas.

Also speaking, the Director of the Department of Scholarship Awards at the Federal Ministry of Education, Mrs Liman K.A.A., who represented the Permanent Secretary, described the orientation programme as more than a send-off event, saying it symbolised the enduring partnership between Nigeria and the European Union in advancing education, innovation and research.

She reminded the beneficiaries that their academic performance and conduct abroad would shape global perceptions about Nigeria, urging them to embrace cultural diversity while maintaining discipline and excellence.

One of the scholarship recipients, Oluchi Yulis Myron, who will pursue a master’s degree in Cultural Management, described the award as an opportunity to gain international experience while acquiring knowledge that could strengthen Nigeria’s cultural and creative industries.

She expressed excitement about studying across different European countries, noting that the programme’s unique mobility component would expose participants to diverse cultures, languages and academic environments.

Myron added that she hopes to apply the knowledge gained in heritage preservation and cultural management to support Nigeria’s cultural sector upon her return.3

The Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s programme remains the European Union’s flagship international scholarship initiative, providing fully funded postgraduate education in leading universities across Europe. Since Nigerian students first joined the programme in 2014, the country has consistently ranked among its strongest performers globally.

With 163 admissions and 89 fully funded scholarships secured in 2026, Nigeria has once again reinforced its reputation as Africa’s leading source of Erasmus Mundus scholars, highlighting the growing global competitiveness of its graduates.
