With the preseason officially over, NFL teams made the necessary cuts over the weekend to get their rosters down to 53 players. However, those rosters are still fluid, as the next step in the process is the waiver wire.

With so many players hitting the waiver wire, teams have a chance to add players who were cut, taking advantage of the influx of available talent. Those who aren’t claimed become eligible to sign with any practice squad across the NFL.

Practice squads are crucial throughout the NFL season, giving teams necessary insurance in case of injuries or underperformance. Players on those practice squads can also continue to develop in practice before hitting the field on game day, which is especially important for young players.

Filling out practice squads marks each organization’s final step in assembling its team before preparing for Week 1. The Sporting News is tracking every team’s practice squad signing following the waiver claims.

How many players are on an NFL practice squad?

NFL teams are allowed to have 17 players on their practice squads, but that number is broken down based on different players’ eligibility. Of those 17 players, 10 are allowed to have fewer than two years of NFL service time, six spots are reserved for veteran players who have been in the league, and one spot is reserved for the NFL’s International Player Pathway program.

Who is eligible for an NFL practice squad?

Only a certain number of players are eligible to spend time on the practice squad depending on their NFL careers, as each team is allowed 10 players with less than two years of NFL service and six players with more than that. Here’s a breakdown of the full stipulations:

• Players who have not accrued one season of NFL experience
• Players who were not active for nine regular-season games or more during their accrued seasons
• At most, four players who earned no more than two accrued NFL seasons
• Six players who’ve earned more than two accrued NFL seasons.

How much are NFL practice squad players paid?

The NFL’s CBA declares a weekly salary for practice squad with two-years-or-less of league service time, so those players will get a fixed rate during the year. That number is set to increase steadily over the course of the next five years.

Can NFL practice squad players play in games?

Teams are able to elevate two players from their practice squad to play in a game each week, but there are limitations. Players are only allowed to be elevated twice in one season, and in order for those players to play in a third game, teams must sign them to their active roster. Additionally, practice squad quarterbacks can be designated as an emergency third quarterback for every game during the season.

Can practice squad players sign with other teams?

Teams are allowed to sign players off another team’s practice squad their own active roster at any point during the season, but they are not allowed to sign players directly from a practice squad to their practice squad. Teams are also allowed to protect four practice squad players from being poached each week.
