Interestingly, he is not the only right-back on Newcastle’s radar, with the Tyneside outfit also pursuing Amar Dedic.
The Bosnian full-back enjoyed a productive debut campaign in the Portuguese top-flight last season. His performances have caught the eye of more than one English club.
Who should Newcastle sign? Dedic vs Belghali
Newcastle should go for Dedic here if it comes down to both of them.
While Belghali is a sensible addition, Newcastle should be looking for the player who can offer the greater all-round impact, and the Bosnian appears to have the edge.
Dedic is the stronger player in duels, giving Newcastle more security when they are forced to defend one-on-one situations.
He is also more productive in the final third, which could be particularly valuable for a side that needs more attacking output from its full-backs.
His ability to carry the ball is another major advantage, allowing him to drive Newcastle up the pitch and break lines himself rather than simply recycling possession.
Perhaps most importantly, Dedic is more progressive with his passing.
He is willing to look forward and move the ball into dangerous areas, something that would fit naturally into Matthias Jaissle’s aggressive style.
Belghali is certainly an attractive option, but if the Magpies have a choice, Dedic should be the player they prioritise.
