Newcastle United have signed goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek from Braga on a five-year deal.

He is Newcastle’s second goalkeeping signing of the transfer window – after Ewen Jaouen from Reims – and has joined in a deal reportedly worth £25.7m (€30m).

Hornicek came through Braga’s academy, making his first team debut in the 2021-22 season, coming on in a Taca de Portugal win.

The 24-year-old made 88 appearances in all competitions for Braga, keeping 37 clean sheets in that time.

Last season, he helped them reach the semi-finals of the Europa League, losing out on a place in the showpiece to Freiburg.

Newcastle United are delighted to announce the signing of Czech Republic international goalkeeper Lukáš Horníček from Portuguese side SC Braga.

The 24-year-old joins for an undisclosed fee and has penned a five-year-deal at St. James’ Park.

“The last few days have been an emotional rollercoaster from when I first heard about the move, and now I’m so happy to be here. It’s a brilliant opportunity in a new league, which I’m very excited about,” he told the club’s website.

“From the very first moment I arrived here, I received a fantastic welcome and really felt the warmth of the club. Everyone has been brilliant in helping me settle in.

“I know Newcastle is a huge football city, with 52,000 fans at St. James’ Park creating an incredible atmosphere and pushing the team every game. I can’t wait to play in front of them.”

Hornicek kept 12 clean sheets in the Primeira Liga last term as he helped Braga to a fourth-place finish.

He made 74 saves from 107 shots on target faced, finishing the campaign with a 69.2% save rate. No goalkeeper in the Portuguese top-flight made more clearances (51) than him.

Hornicek also registered seven shutouts in the Europa League, more than any other goalkeeper.

Only five goalkeepers in Europe’s top 10 leagues last season recorded more keeper sweepings than Hornicek (45), while having the second-best 100% success rate behind Barcelona’s Joan Garcia (52/52).

Newcastle, who look set to announce Matthias Jaissle as Eddie Howe’s successor, will begin their Premier League season against Liverpool on August 23.
