New Steelers HC Mike McCarthy makes a huge change from Tomlin era

There will always be remnants of former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin around the team. But one of the biggest is gone. Steelers writer Mike DeFabo notes on Thursday night that new head coach Mike McCarthy took down the banner Tomlin put up saying “The Standard is the Standard” and replaced it with a huge Steelers logo.

This had been one of the core components of Tomlin’s coaching philosophy but like most of his messages, it got lost somewhere along the way. Tomlin stepped down at the end of the 2025 season and the front office quickly replaced him with McCarthy, a Pittsburgh native.

The Steelers blew out the Green Bay Packers in their preseason opener 28-9. Pittsburgh’s front office is hoping that McCarthy can return this franchise to its previous greatness and that has to start with winning a playoff game.
