New Fallout 4 Expansion Officially Announced For 2027

· · 2 min read

The news that Bethesda had finally begun active development on Fallout 5 was undoubtedly welcome, but there are plenty of unfortunate realities that we still have to contend with despite that. The biggest of those is that the game is likely still years away, and we’ll be lucky to see anything of it before the next decade rolls in.

Upsetting as that is, there’s plenty of Fallout content out there that can still give us a good time if we know where to look. One of the best options for that in 2026 is the previous game in the series which, despite being over a decade old at this point, is still well-supported by content, particularly from its extensive modding community.

Case in point, several major community-made Creations have been highlighted by the developer in the run-up to the Fallout Day celebrations, and there’s one in particular that looks like it could be worth your time as a player.

As first reported by GameRant, one of the mods they brought to everyone’s attention is a new Verified Creation entitled Fallout 4: Fathomless. It essentially serves as a full expansion for the game, leaning into the cosmic horror elements that are already present to bring a new experience that you won’t find anywhere in the base release.

Though we don’t get to see too much of what it’ll be about otherwise, it’s clear that plenty will be set underwater in an unusual departure for the series. The mod is set to drop next year, though they haven’t gone as far as giving us a full release date just yet. The comments on the reveal trailer show that there is plenty of excitement to try it out, despite the age of the game it’s built in.

“Fathomless looks like a spiritual successor to the cut Vault 120. Fallout meets Thalassophobia and Subnautica? Now we’re talking!” one said.

While another added, “That’s actually kinda impressive that either Bethesda hooked up someone with the original voice actors for a glorified mod essentially (what Creations are, not official Bethesda F4 DLCs) or the creator was able to get the voice actors on their own.”

“Fathomless looks pretty cool always wondered what the world would look like under the ocean and how mutated they look,” a third said.

While you wait for that, the other two mods highlighted are set to release in time for Fallout Day. The first is FEVer Dreams, which locks players in a dungeon after they are dosed with the FEV that brought us Super Mutants and other unpleasant creatures. Picture Far Cry 3 style hallucinations and you’re likely pretty close.

The other is Command Override, a mod that gives players the power to take over their robot companions and control them directly for the first time. It’s chaotic fun, but it should also offer plenty of variety if you’re heading into familiar encounters that would otherwise prove to be quite boring if playing as Fallout 4’s protagonist, the Sole Survivor.
