Netflix's 'Wednesday Meets Rick & Morty' Series Officially Returns Next Year
The Netflix show that managed to blend Wednesday‘s supernatural comedy with the cartoon chaos of Rick And Morty returns in 2027, with a third outing of the starry paranormal horror parody officially on the way. With over 37 seasons to date, The Simpsons is the longest-running US scripted prime-time TV series ever made and one of the most influential TV shows of all time. Without the iconic ’90s hit, viewers would likely have never gotten the subsequent adult animation boom.
That would mean no South Park, the controversial younger sibling of The Simpsons, and no Family Guy, American Dad, or Bob’s Burgers, all of which have also racked up hundreds of episodes and multi-decade runs. However, a world without The Simpsons would also mean that Adult Swim’s legendary cult hit Rick & Morty might never have gotten the green light. 13 years after the show’s 2013 debut, it is tough to imagine a world without Rick & Morty.
However, the show’s success wasn’t always seen as a sure thing. Unlike Netflix’s Addams Family reboot Wednesday, which boasted a starry cast, a big budget, and a huge marketing campaign, Rick & Morty was an unexpected sleeper hit that turned into a global phenomenon via word of mouth. Interestingly enough, another Netflix show, Haunted Hotel, mixed Wednesday‘s paranormal plot elements with the raunchier gross-out humour of Rick And Morty, and recently scored a season 3 renewal as a result.
Haunted Hotel Combines Netflix’s Wednesday With Rick And Morty
Set in Upstate New York, Haunted Hotel follows sitcom veteran Eliza Coupe’s overworked single mother, Katherine Freeling, as she takes over her late brother Nathan’s boutique hotel The Undervalue. Katherine struggles to balance revamping the location and raising her two children, Ben and Esther, but her problems are multiplied when it becomes clear that the show’s title isn’t an empty threat.
Not only is the Undervale very much a haunted hotel, but the venue is specifically haunted by Will Forte’s Nathan, Katherine’s hapless brother whose many messes she now has to clean up even after his death. Thus, the stage is set for a series that takes the spooky part of Wednesday‘s premise and gives them an animated makeover, with Nathan trying to help Katherine turn the hotel around while Ben and Esther stumble upon its many undead residents.
Seasons 1 and 2 of Haunted Hotel come with a TV-14 rating, meaning the show is a perfect balance between the family-friendly horror comedy of Wednesday and the more unapologetically mature gore and swearing of Rick & Morty. With two seasons and 18 episodes total, the Netflix series is a must-watch for viewers who have already made it through all nine seasons of Rick & Morty as well as anyone who is currently facing the long wait for Wednesday season 3’s release date.
How Netflix’s Haunted Hotel Compares To Prime Video’s Hazbin Hotel

While it is pretty clear that Haunted Hotel is almost a perfectly equal blend of Wednesday and Rick & Morty, it would be entirely fair if viewers assumed that the show also has a lot in common with its Prime Video soundalike, Hazbin Hotel. Like Haunted Hotel, Hazbin Hotel is another rude, crude, and chaotic animated horror comedy set in an unconventional hotel that features ghosts, demons, and other supernatural beings among its main characters.
However, that is where the similarities between the two shows end. Hazbin Hotel is a fast-paced musical that centers on the surprisingly sweet princess of Hell, Charlie Morningstar, as she uses the titular setting to help lost souls gain access to Heaven. Otherwise, the annual “Culling” of an overcrowded Hell will see their souls destroyed completely.
As this summary implies, Hazbin Hotel is more of a parody of religious horror and fantasy akin to the legendary fantasy writer Terry Pratchett‘s book Good Omens, complete with Hell, demons, angels, God, an immersive setting, and existential stakes. In contrast, Haunted Hotel‘s more modest setting and story feel more like Wednesday‘s spooky setting got a visit from Rick & Morty‘s anarchic animated chaos.
