Netflix's Thrilling New Bodyguard Season 2 Replacement Series Officially Releases In Just 1 Month
The trailer and release date for Netflix’s new series Trinity have been released, showing a naval officer uncovering secrets connected to the secretary of defense.
Trinity was created by Jed Mercurio, the same creator, executive producer and writer behind the British political thriller Bodyguard that aired on BBC One and can be streamed on Netflix. On that series, Game of Thrones alum Richard Madden played a veteran-turned-principal protection officer at the Metropolitan Police Service who experiences PTSD. Bodyguard earned rave reviews and was nominated for two Emmys, with Madden winning a Golden Globe.
Now the actor is teaming up with Mercurio again, this time for Netflix’s upcoming six-episode thriller Trinity, releasing on December 1. Netflix has now shared the official trailer, which shows Madden playing Secretary of Defense Webb Preston and Gugu Mbatha-Raw starring as Commander Katherine Decker. The secretary and naval officer grow close, but Decker realizes that Preston might be involved in a major conspiracy.
The Trinity trailer begins with a precarious situation in the Southern Ocean, with millions of lives at stake. Commander Decker reveals to Secretary Preston that they came within seconds of a tactical nuclear weapon mistakenly being deployed. Preston tells her that in order to make the world a safer place and to protect her crew, she needs to divulge whatever secrets she’s hiding about the ordeal. Decker doesn’t want any of it traced back to her, with Preston assuring her that he’s “got her back.”
Decker gets kidnapped and is ordered to tell her tormentor about Trinity. At this point in the trailer, Secretary Preston’s secrets start becoming an issue. “Foreign powers are desperate to stop my work,” he says, adding that “the less you know, the safer you are.” Decker keeps being told by everyone around her that she needs Preston to open up to her and reveal what he knows.
Preston is intent on stopping madmen from destroying the world, and he’ll do whatever it takes to do so. During a precarious moment, the secretary claims they’re all “sleepwalking into World War III” and lashes out at everyone for not seeing that. Amid explosions and intense drama, the trailer ends with one of Decker’s teammates asking, “What just happened?” She replies, “Trinity.”
Madden and Mbatha-Raw’s co-stars in Trinity are Marcia Gay Harden, JD Pardo, Bruce Greenwood, Robert Wisdom, Kirk Acevedo, Ben Cotton, James Remar, Jason Ralph and Mark O’Brien.
Madden most recently starred in the spy series Citadel with Priyanka Chopra and has also appeared in Medici, Sirens, Eternals, 1917 and Rocketman. Meanwhile, Mbatha-Raw’s credits include the live-action Beauty and the Beast, The Cloverfield Paradox, A Wrinkle in Time, Doctor Who, The Morning Show and Loki.
Aside from being the creator, Mercurio also serves as the showrunner, writer and executive producer of Trinity with Bradley Gardner, Wendy Mericle and Jimmy Mulville.
A second season of Bodyguard never materialized after becoming a hit back in 2018, but Madden and Mercurio are back together for a new thriller on Netflix next month.
Trinity will be released Tuesday, December 1 on Netflix.
