Netflix Officially Reveals the All-Star Cast of New 'Heated Rivalry’ Meets ‘The Cutting Edge’ Rom-Com

Romance stories on the ice have really turned up the heat lately, with Heated Rivalry and Off Campus both exploring young love revolving around the game of hockey. The niche genre of winter sports-related romance has a rich history, though, dating back to classics like The Cutting Edge in 1992, which follows the blossoming relationship between a mercurial figure skater and an injured hockey star thrust together in the Olympic Games. Netflix is now working on a new Winter Olympics rom-com that’s very much following in the footsteps of the Paul Michael Glaser-directed and Tony Gilroy-penned film. It also has a starry leading duo locked in to make the trip to Olympic Village.

Winter Games will unite two familiar stars of the streaming service, Spiderhead alum Miles Teller and Arcane lead Hailee Steinfeld, amid the high-stakes environment of international competition that only comes once every four years. They’ll play a self-sabotaging hockey legend and a long-overlooked skier, each nearing their limits while trying to achieve their goals at the Olympics. When they collide, however, their plans are completely thrown off as they form an unexpected connection, threatening to derail his comeback and her overdue chance at a gold medal. So far, Teller and Steinfeld are the only names attached to star, but that could soon change with production set to begin early next year.

A new report from Production Weekly has cameras rolling on Winter Games starting on March 15, 2027, in Montreal, Quebec, with a two-month shoot that will take the Netflix original until May 12. It should be noted that the streamer hasn’t confirmed anything itself, nor has an official release date been set, given how early along the film still is. Paul Downs Colaizzo will make his directorial debut with the rom-com, having previously penned the Amazon original Brittany Runs a Marathon starring Jillian Bell, while Designated Survivor‘s Pat Cunnane will join him as a co-writer. They’ll have a pair of Oscar-nominated producers helping to bring it together, too, with King Richard‘s Tim and Trevor White backing Winter Games through their Star Thrower Entertainment banner.

Four love stories, four completely different ideas of what it means to
be somebody’s person. This is the one that matches how you actually fall, and what it would ask of
you.

You do not fall for strangers. You fall for the person you have
already been talking to for years, which is the slowest and by some distance the most
durable way anybody has found to do this.

  • When Harry Met Sally made the case that the best romance is an argument you enjoy,
conducted over a decade, by two people refusing to admit what is happening.
  • You want to be known rather than swept away. Somebody who remembers your worst story is
doing better work than anybody arriving with flowers.
  • The film is unusually honest about timing. These two are wrong for each other repeatedly
until suddenly they are not, and neither of them engineered it.
  • You would still be talking about everything at eighty. That is the entire promise.

You want a partner, not an audience. Somebody who wants their own
life as badly as you want yours, and who would never ask you to be smaller to make the
relationship easier.

  • This is the rare romance where both people have a real career and the film takes both of
    them equally seriously.
  • You would rather be pushed than protected. The right person for you is also a bit of a
rival, and that never entirely goes away.
  • It understands the actual problem in ambitious relationships. Not whether you love each
other, but whose turn it is this year.
  • You would still be competing at forty. That is how you would know it was working.

The intensity was never the problem. The secrecy is. You are
drawn to a love that lives entirely in private, and to the particular ache of wanting
somebody you are not supposed to want.

  • Heated Rivalry runs on the oldest engine in romance: two people on opposite sides,
meeting in secret, getting far more attached than either of them planned.
  • You keep your private life genuinely private, and something in you finds hidden things
    more real than public ones.
  • The tension is not only between the two of them. It is between what they have and what
it would cost either one to say it out loud.
  • Years of this, and the whole story is really about whether either of them will finally
    stop hiding.

You do not do this cautiously. When it happens for you it is
immediate and total and it rearranges everything, and you would not accept a smaller version
of it.

  • Titanic gave us the biggest romance in film history and then made it last about five
days, which is precisely the point of it.
  • You measure love by intensity rather than duration. A few days of the real thing beats
    decades of something merely comfortable.
  • The film is not only about the romance. It is about a woman who went on to live an
enormous life afterwards because of it.
  • You would still be telling this story at a hundred years old, and telling it exactly the
    same way.

Entering 2026, Teller was coming off another buzzy rom-com role in Eternity, which Cunnane also co-wrote. He’s since added two very high-profile films to his resume, between the billion-dollar biopic Michael and James Gray‘s latest crime thriller Paper Tiger alongside Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson. Steinfeld, meanwhile, has been out of the spotlight a bit after starring in the Oscar-winning horror hit Sinners. Next on the docket for the actress is Disney’s new animated fantasy Hexed, which will enchant theaters on November 25, though she’ll also swing back into action next year as the voice of Spider-Gwen with the Spider-Verse trilogy capper, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.

Stay tuned here at Collider for further updates on Winter Games in the lead-up to production.
