Net Result: Cowboys WR CeeDee Lamb shows off unorthodox pass-catching drill at camp

It wouldn’t be fair to say that CeeDee Lamb has a problem with drops, but the Cowboys wide receiver is apparently going the extra mile during training camp to make sure it doesn’t become an issue.

Lamb was officially tagged with eight dropped passes on his stat sheet in 2025. That figure was tied for sixth-most in the league, but the number by itself is perhaps a little misleading. When you remember that Lamb was targeted 117 times, his drop percentage comes out to 6.8%. Viewed through that lens, he barely makes the top 40 when it comes to most frequent drops.

Still, that drop percentage was the second-highest of Lamb’s career, topped only by a 7.2% rate in his rookie season, so it stands to reason that maybe the six-year veteran is trying to be a little more sure-handed this year.

And he’s not afraid to look a little silly in the process.

Video clips circulating this week showed the 27-year-old wearing what appears to be a mesh bag or net- some immediately started comparing it to a beekeeper’s mask- while catching short-range balls off the JUGS machine in Oxnard. The five-time Pro Bowler tried it both with and without gloves as he varied the difficulty level during the workout.

The limited visibility didn’t seem to hinder Lamb, though; he reportedly caught every ball while wearing the mask.

The sight prompted plenty of attention and more than a few jokes. One post on X even claimed that Lamb specifically explained the training tactic was a way to prepare for the bright glare inside AT&T Stadium- something that has infamously caused Lamb to drop a pass or two in past seasons- but that was was quickly proven to be a fake quote falsely attributed to the former first-round draft pick. (Cowboys owner Jerry Jones made headlines this week by suggesting he might be open to tinting the windows at the venue or putting up curtains during late-afternoon games.)

Fellow wideout George Pickens also tried on Lamb’s mesh but opted out after the first pass rocketed through his hands.

For now, it will be interesting to see if the “beekeeper’s mask” is picked up by any other Cowboys receivers as a training tool and what Cowboys players and coaches actually say about its intended purpose.

And, of course, whether the unorthodox method ultimately makes sure the Cowboys don’t get stung by a dropped ball ruining a would-be touchdown drive this fall.
