The Dallas Mavericks have made their intentions clear when it comes to former Duke Blue Devil Kyrie Irving. Despite their current rebuild, Dallas has remained adamant that they plan on retaining Irving to pair with another Duke alum, Cooper Flagg.
However, that hasn’t deterred other teams from their pursuit. According to NBA insider Marc Stein, other franchises are hopeful that their stance may change.
“The Mavericks, as we’ve been writing since mid-June, have consistently swatted away trade interest this offseason in nine-times-an-All-Star guard Kyrie Irving,” Stein wrote. “Rival teams, however, continue to wonder aloud about how firmly Dallas will stick to that stance once the season begins and the next in-season trade deadline on Feb. 11 gradually approaches.”
While the pairing of Flagg and Irving would be quite the spectacle for both NBA and Duke fans, a trade involving Irving almost makes too much sense. Although the Mavericks are content to open the season with both Blue Devils, a move at the trade deadline would be sensible for all parties. As Irving enters his age-34 season, the Mavericks could afford to pick up more assets to build for Cooper Flagg’s future. Furthermore, Irving would fetch a solid return from any contender looking to make a mid-season splash, especially given his postseason experience.
