Murder of Ogun Polytechnic student: NANS calls for security overhaul, arrest of killers

The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, South-West Zone, has demanded the immediate arrest and prosecution of the armed robbers responsible for the murder of a final-year student at D.S. Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic, Itori in Ogun State.

The female victim, a final year student of the Marketing department at the institution, was killed during a Monday night robbery, in the Eruku area, sparking outrage and renewed calls for comprehensive security measures around student communities across the state.

DAILY POST reported that students took to the streets to protest on Tuesday, blocking the Lagos-Abeokuta expressway, paralysing traffic along the busy highway, leaving commuters and motorists stranded for several hours.

A delegation led by NANS South-West Coordinator, Josiah Adeyemo, including the Ogun State Joint Campus Committee, JCC, Chairman, Olabode Faruq and the institution’s Students’ Union Government, SUG, President visited the Polytechnic to sympathise with the student body and management.

Speaking during the visit, Adeyemo described the killing as a devastating loss to the entire Nigerian student body and urged government officials to treat campus security as a critical emergency.

“Students deserve to learn in a peaceful and secure environment. Protecting students and educational institutions should remain a top priority for both the government and security agencies,” he said.

Adeyemo appealed to the Inspector-General of Police, the Ogun State Commissioner of Police, and Governor Dapo Abiodun to urgently deploy security personnel to student-dense off-campus neighbourhoods.

The student leadership also paid a courtesy visit to the Eleruku of Eruku Kingdom, Oba Ajagungbade Gbadewolu Atobatele, to discuss community-level protection for off-campus residents.

The monarch said ten local security operatives have been deployed to prevent recurrence and bolster surveillance in the area.

At a meeting with the delegation, the Rector of D.S. Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic, Goke Rauf, expressed deep sorrow over the loss and assured that the management is addressing security vulnerabilities.

Rauf announced strategic measures to improve student welfare and safety including the construction of new student hostels to reduce dependence on vulnerable off-campus housing, strengthening security arrangements around the campus perimeter, rehabilitation of internal roads, and the introduction of new welfare programs for a safer learning environment.

The NANS delegation commended the management’s proposals but stressed that prompt implementation is vital to protecting lives and restoring confidence among students.
