More NFL teams need to follow how the Lions dealt with Terrion Arnold

More professional sports teams should follow that example.

Winning football games should never outweigh basic standards of conduct.

Setting the Right Standard

Professional athletes are role models, whether they ask for that responsibility or not. Millions of young fans watch them every week, wear their jerseys, and aspire to follow in their footsteps. Organizations also have a responsibility to their employees, sponsors, and communities. By moving on from Arnold immediately, the Lions demonstrated that no individual is bigger than the franchise.

A stronger league-wide standard could also serve as a deterrent. While no policy can eliminate criminal behavior, players may think twice if they know an arrest for a serious offense could immediately cost them their career rather than simply result in a temporary suspension or a public relations challenge.

A Standard That Should Extend Beyond Football

This isn’t just an NFL issue. Every professional sports league should be willing to make difficult decisions when players are accused of serious criminal conduct. Teams routinely speak about culture, leadership, and accountability. Those words only carry weight when organizations are willing to act consistently, even when it means losing a star player.

The Lions deserve credit for standing by their principles. Their response won’t erase what allegedly happened, but it establishes the kind of organizational standard that fans should expect. Professional sports should never create the impression that extraordinary talent earns extraordinary exceptions. If teams across every league adopted the same mindset, it would send a powerful message that character matters just as much as performance on the field.
