MM 6.10: Maryland men’s basketball secures game against South Carolina

Maryland men’s basketball learned of a new nonconference opponent Wednesday, and it’s one that will be familiar to regular scrollers of College Park fan pages.

The Terps are set to spread holiday cheer on Dec. 19 when they travel up I-95 to take on the South Carolina Gamecocks at CFG Bank Arena in Baltimore.

The teams haven’t met since March 29, 2005, when the Terps were eliminated from the NIT semifinals by the Gamecocks in a 75-67 game. Maryland has won 31 of the 58 contests between the two teams, but just three of those wins have come since 1970.

This holiday season game has the potential to bring out some Grinches in the crowd — online fanbases of the two schools have been less than friendly to each other in recent times, particularly in football, where tug-of-war over Zion Elee caused particular unrest.

On the court, the Terps (12-21 in 2025-26) and the Gamecocks (13-19 in 2025-26) will again be competing for one target — bouncing back from a disappointing season. A similarly-situated program is an ideal opponent for one team to make a statement against.

Incoming Maryland women’s basketball freshman Jordyn Jackson had 12 points and seven rebounds in 21 minutes as Team USA began the FIBA U18 Women’s AmeriCup with a 113-47 win over Argentina.

Former Maryland football and baseball player Bud Coombs is transferring to Vanderbilt as a baseball-only athlete.

ESPN has named redshirt senior cornerback Amari Jackson and freshman defensive end Zion Elee among its top 90 college football newcomers.
