MLB making changes to HR Derby & fans should be excited

For many baseball fans, the Home Run Derby has become just as entertaining as the MLB All-Star Game itself. Every summer, some of the biggest stars in Major League Baseball take center stage and put on a power-hitting spectacle unlike anything else in the sport. Towering home runs, dramatic comebacks, and unforgettable moments have turned the Derby into one of the highlights of All-Star Week.

Now, MLB is making another significant change to the event, and it could make the competition even more exciting. According to a recent post by Underdog MLB, the league is moving away from the timed format that has been used in recent years and returning to a system that focuses entirely on swings.

Goodbye Clock, Hello Strategy

Under the new format, hitters will no longer race against the clock. Instead, participants will be given a set number of swings in each round:

• First Round: 20 swings
• Semifinals: 15 swings
• Championship Round: 15 swings

Perhaps the most interesting addition is the new “last ball” rule. The final pitch of each round will allow players to continue hitting until they fail to hit a home run. In other words, if a player keeps sending baseballs over the fence, their round continues.

Why This Is Good for the Derby

The timed format created excitement, but it also created chaos. Fans often struggled to keep track of exactly how many home runs had been hit as baseballs were flying through the air nonstop. It also forced hitters to rush through swings, sometimes sacrificing quality for quantity.

This new setup should create more suspense and strategy. Every swing matters, and players will have the opportunity to pace themselves rather than frantically trying to beat a countdown clock.

The “keep swinging until you don’t go deep” finish also introduces the potential for dramatic endings. One hot streak could completely change a round and create memorable moments that fans talk about for years.

Baseball’s biggest stars are already capable of putting on an incredible show. By simplifying the rules and placing the focus back on each individual swing, MLB may have found a way to make the Home Run Derby even better.
