The Field of Dreams game is a special moment for Major League Baseball, but the league is hoping weather doesn’t dampen the enthusiasm.

Rain is in the forecast in Iowa on Thursday night, which could impact the game between the Minnesota Twins and Philadelphia Phillies. The new and improved Field of Dreams stadium is outside and without any kind of covering, so any rain would force a delay.

MLB, of course, planned this game with the hope that it will go on as scheduled, but rain doesn’t always act in kind. Here’s the latest on the weather at the Field of Dreams game and what happens if there’s a delay.

MLB Field of Dreams Game weather updates

According to the National Weather Service, there is a 20 percent chance of rain on Thursday night in Dyersville, Iowa. There was a tarp on the field for much of the afternoon, but the grounds crew took it off a few hours before scheduled first pitch.

The tarp is coming off and the heavy rain, for now, has stopped at the Field of Dreams. Whether it stays that way is the question now. pic.twitter.com/RzrIY6nASA

As first pitch quickly approaches, the rain doesn’t seem like it will be much of an issue.

⚾️☔️ Pretty pleased with model trends in Dyersville Iowa for the Field of Dreams game. Heavy stuff likely holds well South, and I’m not expecting more than a few sprinkles over the ballpark.

MLB Field of Dreams Game rainout contingency plan

While it would be less than ideal for the game to be rained out, there is a reported contingency plan if the game is postponed. Both the Twins and Phillies are off Friday for travel, but if rain forces a change of plans on Thursday, the game is expected to be moved to Friday night.

In talking with Minnesota Twins GM Jeremy Zoll, the plan is if there is a rainout here tonight at the Field of Dreams, the teams will bus to Cedar Rapids and stay the night, then return to Dyersville and play tomorrow night. Keep your fingers crossed.

The previous two Field of Dreams games played on the scheduled night, as weather didn’t impact either contest in 2021 or 2022. Therefore, this would be the first time that MLB would have to use a contingency plan.
