You can put all the narratives from Mitch Marner’s Toronto Maple Leafs tenure to bed.
Maybe he used to struggle to live up to his standard in the playoffs. That’s no longer the case. He’s having a postseason for the ages for the Vegas Golden Knights.
And on Saturday night, in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final against the Carolina Hurricanes, Marner had one of the best periods in championship series history.
Marner started his surge with an assist 10:26 into the second period, helping set up a Tomas Hertl goal for a 1-0 lead.
Just 16 seconds after that, Marner scored himself, from William Karlsson and Shea Theodore.
Three minutes and 50 seconds later, Marner scored again, this time from Brayden McNabb.
And then two minutes and 20 seconds after that, Marner scored his third goal of the period, from Hertl.
It was three goals in 6:10 for Marner. That’s a new Stanley Cup record.
Previously, Maurice ‘Rocket’ Richard had set that mark at 6:21, a whopping 69 years ago.
Now, it belongs to Marner.

He’s also up to 28 points on the postseason after those four points in the second period on Saturday night.
It’s just astounding. Marner was brought to Vegas to make a difference. He had made it clear he didn’t want to go back to Toronto. The Maple Leafs had no real choice but to sign-and-trade him to the Golden Knights.
And now, on the biggest stage in hockey, Marner is proving himself to be one of the best players on the planet.
It’s painful for the Maple Leafs to watch from afar.
But it’s looking like one of the best moves the Golden Knights have ever made.
