Few hype videos in recent college football history proved as eye-catching as Kansas’ latest, released days before the Jayhawks took on rival Missouri in “The Border War.”
The video referenced the region’s precarious history, likening the actions of Missouri-based pro-slavery forces to villains compared to Kansas-born abolitionists like John Brown.
The Tigers answered the call on the field, downing the Jayhawks 38-21 on Friday night. Shortly after the game went final, Missouri head coach Eli Drinkwitz had his say about the polarizing video, which garnered millions of views ahead of the tilt.

Drinkwitz expressed dismay with Kansas’ social team following Missouri’s triumph in the latest iteration of the Border War. The Tigers head coach told reporters he was “disappointed” with the way the matchup was characterized, calling for “unity.”
“Everybody’s got complicated pasts,” Drinkwitz said. “To make that an icon was bizarre to me. I’m just glad this whole ‘right vs. wrong’ bullcrap that was started just got settled on a football field. .. It’s not even deeper than that.”

Missouri’s seventh-year boss felt the Jayhawks were in poor taste referencing Bleeding Kansas, a series of armed clashes between John Brown’s pro-abolition corps (known as the Jayhawkers) and the pro-slavery Border Ruffians. Kansas and Missouri’s Border War rivalry takes its name from that armed conflict.
In fact, Drinkwitz admitted he was left so incensed by the Jayhawks’ social team that he and his team felt compelled to “embarrass” its adversary.
“I just wanted to let them know, ‘Dude,what are y’all doing,” Drinkwitz said. “This is a football game. It shouldn’t be bigger than that.”
When asked whether he hoped that the rivalry would continue, Drinkwitz was ambivalent.
“I don’t really care if it continues of not,” Drinkwitz said. “If they’re going to be weird about it, then what’s the point? If they want to have a football game, and play a football game, and have a great rivalry on the border, then awesome, let’s do it.
“But if we want to make it deeper than that, we left Kansas bleeding again, so call it good.”
