Michigan hockey adds ex-Wings assistant coach Brewer as general manager

Former Detroit Red Wings assistant coach Andrew Brewer was hired as general manager of the University of Michigan’s hockey program.

Brewer, who has nearly two decades of experience in pro, international and collegiate hockey, began his NHL career in Detroit on Mike Babcock’s coaching staff in 2014-15.

Babcock and Brewer won gold medals for Team Canada at the 2014 Sochi Olympic Games when Brewer was a video coach for Hockey Canada.

As Michigan’s GM and chief of staff, Brewer will oversee hockey operations, roster management and long-term program planning.

He will work closely with coach Brandon Naurato and his staff in player personnel, recruiting and retention, player development, NHL relations, technology and long-term program strategy.

“Michigan Hockey has an incredible tradition, an internationally respected brand and an unwavering commitment to excellence” Brewer said in a statement.

“My goal is to support our players and staff in every possible way while helping to build the structure, resources and long-term strategy needed to compete for championships annually.”

Brewer joins the Wolverines after spending the 2025-26 season with the Anaheim Ducks as an assistant coach on Joel Quenneville’s staff.

A native of Fredericton, New Brunswick, Brewer spent two seasons as video coach with the Florida Panthers from 2020-22 and five seasons as an assistant coach with the Toronto Maple Leafs from 2015-20.

“Andrew brings a unique combination of NHL experience, talent evaluation and a deep understanding of how technology and data can enhance every aspect of building a championship roster,” Naurato said in a statement.

“He’s been part of winning organizations at every level of the game, and his ability to identify talent, manage player personnel and think strategically will be invaluable to our program. … He’s the perfect person to help shape the future of Michigan hockey.”

In addition to his NHL experience, Brewer has represented Hockey Canada as video coach at the Olympic Winter Games, World Cup of Hockey and multiple IIHF World Championships and World Junior Championships.

Before entering the pro ranks, Brewer spent three seasons as video coach at the University of New Brunswick from 2008-11, helping the program capture Canadian Interuniversity Sport national titles in 2009 and 2011.
