Michigan football has landed one of its top targets at the position after months of linebacker consternation.
Frederrick Ford, a four-star class of 2027 linebacker out of Greenwood, Mississippi (Greenwood), pledged to join the Wolverines on Thursday, June 25, choosing U-M over four other finalists in Ole Miss, Mississippi State, LSU and Tennessee.
Ford stands 6 feet 4 and 203 pounds and is highly regarded as one of the best prospects in the nation, ranked No. 9 in Mississippi, No. 17 among linebackers and No. 224 regardless of position per 247 Sports’ composite rankings.
“Projects as a potential impact defender at the Power Four level in an era where everyone wants to get longer and faster,” wrote 247Sports director of scouting Andrew Ivins. “Will need to improve the sonar in the coming years while also adding some much-needed weight, but has no shortage of developmental upside with his range and physicality.”
A multisport athlete, Ford helped Greenwood’s basketball team reach the Mississippi 4A Final Four as a junior which included a 21-point effort in the regional finals and is a two-time state qualifier in the high jump, according to his recruiting profile.
Michigan offered Ford at the beginning of the month, then after visits to Florida State and Tennessee, he was in Ann Arbor over the June 19 weekend, “Victors Weekend” which seemed to help seal the deal.
He is the second linebacker commit to pledge to Alex Whittingham joining three-star Brayden ‘Tank’ Watson and is now the 23rd overall pledge in the class of 2027, which ranked No. 22 in the nation before his addition.
