Michael Harris II has quickly developed into one of the most valuable players in Major League Baseball, not only because of his offensive production but because of the elite defense he provides in center field for the Atlanta Braves. At just 25 years old, Harris has become widely regarded by scouts, analysts and advanced metrics as the best defensive center fielder in baseball, giving Atlanta a major advantage every night.

Harris’ combination of speed, instincts and route-running allows him to cover more ground than almost any outfielder in the game. Key metrics consistently place him among the league leaders in outs above average and defensive runs saved, while opposing hitters regularly watch extra-base hits disappear because of his ability to track balls in the gaps. His range has become a critical part of Atlanta’s run prevention system.

The Braves have leaned heavily on Harris’ defense during multiple stretches this season, especially with injuries affecting parts of the pitching staff and outfield depth. Even when Atlanta has battled inconsistency offensively, Harris’ glove has remained one of the team’s most reliable assets.

Offensively, Harris has also rebounded in a major way during the 2026 season. Harris entered this week hitting .298 with 12 home  runs, 32 RBIs and an .864 OPS. He has also produced several breakout performances recently, including a four-hit game against the Boston Red Sox and a two-homer performance against the Miami Marlins.

Since winning National League Rookie of the Year honors in 2022, Harris has become one of the foundational pieces of Atlanta’s core alongside Ronald Acuña Jr., Austin Riley and Spencer Strider. His defensive excellence in center field gives the Braves stability in one of baseball’s most demanding positions while also energizing the club offensively with his growing power and consistency.
