Michael Carrick has said the magic of Old Trafford helped Manchester United produce a stunning comeback to beat Roma 3-2 in the Champions League.
Manchester United ended their winless run in dramatic fashion on Tuesday night, as Carrick’s side recovered from two goals down to beat the Serie A side.
Bruno Fernandes scored from the penalty spot to kickstart the comeback, before a late double from Matheus Cunha, who was later sent off, snapped the club’s winless run.
Reflecting at full-time, Carrick said his squad spoke about the ‘magic’ that Old Trafford can produce on big European nights.
“It was a good night. A lot of credit to the players, for starters, showing that character and that quality when we needed it, and the supporters.
“This place does incredible things. There’s magic here and we spoke about it at half-time,”he said.
“I thought we grew into it in the first half, actually, after giving the goals away too easily. We spoke at half-time about how this place can change, and it only takes one moment. The boys made the most of every little opportunity, really, and were fantastic in the end.”
The win eases some of the mounting pressure on Carrick, who was asked whether the result can be a turning point in the club’s season – and his future.
The 45-year-old was keen to stress that Manchester United must build on what was a positive night.
“It’s one game, so it depends on what happens next. We’ve got to capitalise on that.
“But tonight, the boys showed an awful lot. I thought we came out in the second half and, unfortunately, with Carlos [Baleba] having to go off, Youri [Tielemans] came on the pitch and I thought he was fantastic. He showed everything that he is as a personality and as a character. He’s experienced, to step into a game like that.
“The boys just went with the flow, and you could feel how positive it was. It was nice to see this place like that again.”
