Before a ball was even kicked on Tuesday evening’s match between Mexico and Ecuador, the game already had its first foul: the weather.

For the second time this summer, a World Cup game has been delayed due to inclement weather. France vs. Iraq made tournament history by becoming the first World Cup game to be halted due to weather. 

In Mexico City, the game won’t be cancelled just yet. Only the kickoff time has been postponed at the moment, with more updates coming in the near future.

Here’s the latest on the imminent weather delay that impacted the Round of 32 match in Mexico City.

9:16 p.m. – Mexico has come back out onto the field, so the weather is beginning to clear.

9:10 p.m. – FIFA is expecting a 10 p.m. ET start time in Mexico City, which would make for an hourlong delay.

8:22 p.m. – Fans are still jubilant despite the bad weather. Not much looks to be getting in the way of game day spirit in Mexico City, ponchos included.

8:15 p.m. – Just under an hour before kickoff, Fox’s pregame broadcast reported that tonight’s kickoff time between Mexico and Ecuador would be pushed back due to inclement rain and lightning around the stadium.

There have been no official reports sharing when Mexico vs. Ecuador will resume play in Mexico City. Shortly before the game’s inception, the kickoff time was pushed back due to heavy rain and lightning in the Mexico City area.

FIFA lightning delay rules

The Sporting News contacted FIFA regarding specific rules and regulations about lightning and treacherous weather conditions affecting a match. FIFA confirmed the following:

“In the event of severe weather conditions such as lightning or thunderstorms, FIFA will implement a thorough procedure based on public safety standards, providing clear and specific safety guidelines to all stakeholders involved. FIFA has dedicated meteorological support throughout the tournament to provide accurate forecasting and strengthen real-time operational decision-making.”

If a weather delay is triggered at a roofless venue, both the pitch and seats must be evacuated by fans, players, and staff.

Players and team officials are required to return to the dressing rooms as quickly as possible, and fans must leave their seats and take shelter inside the stadium concourse. They must remain sheltered until the danger passes and the all-clear is sounded.
