NEW YORK — Freddy Peralta was supposed to bolster the Mets rotation for a postseason run. Now, the Rays are making a wager on his potential on their postseason quest.

The Mets have sent the 30-year-old right-hander to the Rays in exchange for prospects Aidan Smith, Gary Gill Hill and Emilien Pitre, according to multiple reports. The Athletic’s Will Sammon was the first to report the deal. MLB’s Mark Feinsand had the return.

The Rays are betting on Peralta’s upside as he stumbled to a 5-9 record with a 4.99 ERA and 1.48 WHIP in 22 starts in his first season in Queens. The Mets had offloaded a pair of their top-5 prospects in Brandon Sproat and Jett Williams to land Peralta and Tobias Myers in the offseason.

In Smith, Gill Hill and Pitrie, the Mets netted the Rays’ No. 15, 26 and 27 prospects, respectively, according to MLB Pipeline.

Smith, a 22-year-old outfielder who was drafted in the fourth round in 2023, has a .693 OPS with 10 home runs, 37 RBI and 41 runs in 49 games for High-A Bowling Green.

The 21-year-old Gill Hill is a right-handed pitcher currently in Double-A Montgomery where he is 4-3 with a 4.43 ERA and 61 strikeouts in 81⅓ innings.

Pitre, a 23-year-old Canadian second baseman, was a 2024 second round pick out of Kentucky. He is slashing .323/.451/.492 with 10 home runs, 30 RBI and 25 runs in 37 games for Montgomery.

With the Mets entering play on Sunday with a 47-65 record, Peralta is the second player moved within a week of Monday’s 6 p.m. trade deadline. The Mets also moved left-handed reliever A.J. Minter to the Twins earlier in the week. Clay Holmes and Brooks Raley have also discussed their belief that they would be moved before the deadline this week.

Check back for more updates and analysis on the developing story of Peralta’s trade.
