Max Verstappen Explains His Monaco GP Retirement After Fatal Engine Issue

Red Bull had genuine reason for optimism heading into Sunday’s race in Monaco. Max Verstappen had qualified second, just 0.043 seconds behind Kimi Antonelli‘s pole lap, and the team had made real progress over the course of the weekend after a difficult start to the year. None of that mattered once the lights went out.

Lando Norris had to swerve to avoid Verstappen’s stalled Red Bull at lights out, with the RB21 stuck motionless while the field poured toward Sainte-Dévote around it. Verstappen later explained that the warning signs had been there before the start – he just couldn’t do much about it.

“When we did the formation lap, it was not going very well,” Verstappen said. “And then, after that the pre-start was terrible, like there was just no consistency. And then the engine just dropped dead and I only got a little bit of power back after the first corner. And then the engine sounded really awful so I could not go full throttle, so we brought it back and that was it.”

A 2026 Season That Keeps Finding New Ways to Go Wrong

At the Chinese Grand Prix earlier in the season, Verstappen had also suffered an engine-related retirement, so this is not a new category of problem for Red Bull in 2026. Isack Hadjar also complained of engine braking issues during the race.

Verstappen’s contract with Red Bull runs until 2028, though reports suggest he holds an exit clause that could be triggered if he sits outside the top two in the standings by the summer break.

Asked whether the encouraging pace in qualifying at least offers something to build on, Verstappen pointed toward next weekend’s Spanish Grand Prix as the more telling test. “Completely different track, so it will be a good test to see if we actually really made a proper step forward or not, because that’s all about high speed and aero performance. So that will be an interesting weekend.”
