The Mavericks’ Dusty May gives props toDallas Mavericks dominated the struggling Utah Jazz en route to a 112-100 win in the NBA Cup. The game was a memorable one for Morez Johnson Jr., who had a breakout game as he notched the first double-double of his career with 13 points and 17 rebounds, including an impressive 10 offensive boards.
Mavericks head coach Dusty May, who also coached Johnson when they were at Michigan, was full of praise for the rookie. May noted that after a slow start in part due to a lower leg injury during preseason, Johnson is getting back to his best physically.
“The first glimpse was in San Antonio when Naji (Marshall) threw the lob, and ‘Rez went up and got it. Even though he didn’t finish it, that was the first glimpse when the staff said, ‘Okay, his athleticism is almost back,'” May said.

May also applauded the fact that Johnson can still put up big numbers despite not getting his number called on many plays.
“His energy, his effort. He’s a winning player, and for a guy you don’t call any plays for, if you can get him 13 and 17 without calling any plays for him. We need those types of glue guys,” May added.

Heading into the game, Johnson was averaging 7.4 points and 3.1 rebounds in eight games, all off the Mavs bench. But as his performance against Utah showed, the No. 9 pick in this year’s draft of capable of a lot more. His game figures to be a nice complement to Cooper Flagg, who has the skillset of a potential top-10 player. As Johnson continues to get back to peak fitness, he figures to provide some much-needed energy and physicality to the Mavs in the frontcourt.
