Former lightweight title challenger Michael Chandler made the walk from the Oval Office to the octagon on The White House lawn on Sunday desperately in need of a win. He had lost three fights in a row and five of his last six. The 40 year-old faced No. 9 ranked Mauricio Ruffy.
Ruffy entered the bout coming off a win over Rafael Fiziev and looking to build off the momentum. The 29 year-old Brazilian wanted to show it’s a new ear in the 155-pound weight class.
Ruffy took the center of the cage while Chandler rotated on the outside. Chandler landed first with an outside leg kick. He pressed forward and briefly looked for a takedown. Ruffy defended off the attempt. Ruffy connected with a stiff jab that backed Chandler up. Chandler looked for a takedown again but didn’t commit to it.
Ruffy began moving forward. Chander pushed off the cage with his foot and landed a superman punch. Ruffy again backed Chandler up with a stiff jab. Ruffy delivered a hard right hand. Chandler was backed up against the fence. Ruffy landed a spinning heel kick. Chandler secured a takedown but Ruffy got up. Ruffy connected with a right hand that staggered Chandler. Ruffy dug to the body with a left hand. Ruffy landed another spinning heel kick that hurt Chandler. A right hand follow and another one put Chandler out.
The official time of the TKO stoppage was 4:29 of the first round.
