Marvel just introduced its new She-Hulk, reinventing Jennifer Walters as fans know her. Here’s everything you need to know about the reinvention, and why the Jade Giantess is glowing like a uranium rod.
Introduced in 1979, She-Hulk was created by Stan Lee and artist John Buscema, mostly because Lee wanted to lock down the rights following the immense success of the Incredible Hulk television show. Played in the MCU’s She-Hulk: Attorney at Law by Tatiana Maslany, She-Hulk characteristically has far greater control over her powers than her cousin Bruce.
Now, Marvel delivers a chilling reversal to that status quo, reinventing Jennifer Walters’ She-Hulk as an outright villain…
Marvel’s In-Verse Continuity Turns She-Hulk Toxic

The recent Marvel Dimensions – from Alex Ross, Jason Millet, Josh Johnson and Ariana Maher – introduces an alternate reality called the In-Verse. In this twisted world, Marvel’s biggest heroes are a force for evil, acting as the enforcers of a fascistic nation known as the American Stronghold.
One such hero is Jennifer Walters, who is shown briefly jogging down the street, glowing with radiation and releasing toxic vapor as twisted versions of Iron Fist and Power Man look on. Famously a fan of classic comics, Alex Ross draws this new She-Hulk in iconic ’80s fashion – a look strongly associated with She-Hulk’s ultra-popular John Byrne era.

Generally depicted as a capable, optimistic character, it’s perfect for Jennifer Walters that even in a world where she and her allies are evil, she’s still seen happily living her best life. Being pictured alongside Iron Fist and Luke Cage is seemingly a reference to their past working together as Heroes for Hire.
While (like a lot of In-Verse characters) Jen’s codename isn’t given in this graphic novel, it can be assumed it’s some variation of ‘Reactor,’ since that’s Bruce Banner’s codename in this world.
The Hulk Family Are The In-Verse’s Most Terrifying Threat

While Jennifer Walters is shown living her best life in this world gone wrong, Bruce Banner is turned into a terrifying superweapon. The comics’ opening reveals that rather than his Hulk form, Bruce can generate a gargantuan construct made of pure radiation. Using this power, he’s dispatched abroad to subjugate other countries, bringing them under the aegis of the American Stronghold.
Notably, the In-Verse Bruce appears to LOVE this role, grinning and joking after a massive detonation. That has some dark implications for the In-Verse’s She-Hulk. In mainstream Marvel lore, Jennifer gains her powers from a blood transfusion, after she’s injured by gangsters.
In the In-Verse, it’s highly unlikely that Bruce Banner would do anything so altruistic, raising the question of whether She-Hulk was willingly recruited into the family business as a professional weapon of mass destruction or irradiated against her will.
Will Fans See the In-Verse She-Hulk Again?

Marvel Dimensions is a standalone story with an auteur tone and the rare status of being published as a graphic novel without a preceding series format. This makes it less likely that Marvel has specific plans to integrate the new reality into its traditional canon.
Despite that fact, Marvel Dimensions makes its later integration feel likely, revealing that Earth-616’s Avengers have already encountered and fought the In-Verse’s First Strike. While there’s no reason to assume there are immediate plans for Earth-616 to cross over with the In-Verse, the groundwork has been done to make it as easy as possible, since neither the concept or the characters would need extensive introduction.
Should that crossover take place, the Hulk family would be an obvious focus, given how compellingly Marvel Dimensions reinvents Bruce Banner and She-Hulk as living nuclear weapons with no hesitation to unleash their full power.
Marvel Dimensions is available now from Marvel Comics.
