Marvel's New Iron Man Replacement Officially Debuts

· · 4 min read

Marvel introduces two characters who take up the Iron Man suit of armor under Tony Stark’s tutelage. Of all Avengers in Marvel lore, Iron Man is the most likely candidate to hang up his superhero mantle due to his human nature. Unlike the super-soldiers, gods, and enhanced heroes around him, Tony Stark is an ordinary mortal whose life depends on the integrity of his armored suits. Decades of high-impact battles and near-death experiences inevitably inflict a physical and psychological toll that would force any regular human to retire early, regardless of how advanced the Iron Man tech might be.

Luckily for Tony Stark, Iron Man keeps a large network of capable successors who can step up to claim his high-tech legacy across various timelines. In mainstream comic continuity, MIT prodigy Riri Williams crafts her own specialized armor to protect the world as Ironheart, and Victor von Doom briefly adopts the title of the Infamous Iron Man to seek personal redemption. Alternate realities feature Peter Parker using Stark tech to complement his Spider-Man abilities, while Pepper Potts uses her customized Rescue system to provide battlefield support. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe exclusively, Iron Man’s potential successors include the tech-savvy Harley Keener, as well as Tony’s daughter Morgan Stark.

Tony Stark doesn’t share his Iron Man technology with anyone, hence why every character who gets to pilot one of his suits of armor joins a very exclusive list in the Marvel multiverse.

Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon Become Tony Stark’s Iron Man Successors

In the high-octane crossover comic Iron Man: Racing Towards Doom , real-world Formula 1 stars Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon join forces with Tony Stark to thwart Doctor Doom’s attempts to sabotage their race. Written by Ethan Sacks with dynamic art from Greg Land, this promotional one-shot adds the Atlassian Williams F1 Team to the Marvel Universe during a Grand Prix season where Doctor Doom tries to guarantee victory for Latveria. As Doom’s Doom Bots endanger the drivers, Tony Stark quickly provides Sainz and Albon with their own suits of armor, inspired by their real F1 uniforms and helmets.

Sainz and Albon suit up alongside team principal James Vowles and an honorary Williams pit crew, backed by the remote-controlled support of Iron Man’s armor armory. They’re also flanked by Avengers allies like Black Widow and Captain America, and they use their advanced technology to fight Doom’s forces both on and off the track. Curiously, Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon aren’t the only real-world figures to don their own Iron Man suits this year, as Chef José Andrés also suited up as Iron Man’s successor only a week before in Meals To Astonish: Avengers .

Iron Man: Racing Towards Doom Remakes Two MCU Movies

Iron Man’s Latest One-Shot Comic Pays Homage To The MCU’s Divisive Phase 1 Movies

Iron Man: Racing Towards Doom #1 also recreates the Monaco Grand Prix sequence from Iron Man 2. Just like the 2010 Phase 1 movie, Racing Towards Doom places Tony Stark on a live racetrack that quickly transforms into a war zone once a supervillain arrives to sabotage the race. Whiplash is replaced with a far more capable Doctor Doom, and the deployment of Tony Stark’s unforgettable Iron Man Mark V suit is replaced by the introduction of Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon’s F1 uniform-inspired suits.

Tony Stark’s unplanned fight against Doctor Doom also pays homage to the House Party Protocol and the Iron Legion from Iron Man 3. Before Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon don their suits of armor in Iron Man: Racing Towards Doom, Stark deploys a strike team of automated suits to manage the crisis. This version of the MCU’s first Iron Legion includes classic versions of the Iron Man armor, as well as iconic iterations like the Silver Centurion. Both the racetrack ambush and the autonomous armor armada were solid concepts trapped inside highly divisive MCU movies that struggled with pacing and narrative focus.

Which of Iron Man‘s successors is your favorite?
