Marvel Studios Officially Gives James Spader A New Character After Ultron

Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for VisionQuest episode 7.VisionQuest‘s latest episode cements the start of a new era for James Spader, as the Marvel Cinematic Universe has just given the actor a new role to play, and it comes with a major twist. Spader is one of the most talented actors in the MCU, which is saying something, given the wide array of movie stars and TV icons in the franchise.

Throughout his career, the actor has starred in popular projects like The Blacklist, The Office, Lincoln, Stargate, and more. Spader joined the MCU back in 2015, playing the title Marvel villain in Avengers: Age of Ultron. While the movie is widely regarded as the least exciting of the Avengers movies, Spader’s performance as Ultron has always been deemed one of the best for MCU villains.

That is why it was so disappointing when the franchise seemingly killed Ultron in his MCU debut, not using the character in live-action for a decade. Thankfully, the Spader MCU drought came to an end through Marvel’s new TV show on Disney+, VisionQuest. The sci-fi series brings back many MCU AIs and gives them human avatars, with Spader both playing Ultron in robotic form and in his human persona.

Spader’s 2026 MCU return has also served to put him on a select list, as the actor has become one of the MCU stars who have played more than one character in the shared universe. VisionQuest episode 7, the penultimate episode of the Marvel series, confirmed that with a surprising twist that sets up the finale to Marvel’s WandaVision trilogy, which also includes Agatha All Along, to be an exciting one.

VisionQuest episode 7’s ending finally reveals who the mysterious character known as The Client, the person hiring bounty hunters to bring him Paul Bettany’s Vision, is. While the character’s name has yet to be revealed, it came as a surprise that The Client is played by none other than Spader himself. The move is perfect for the new MCU series, as VisionQuest is all about AIs finding their own identities and wrestling with real feelings. Previously on the show, Emily Hampshire’s E.D.I.T.H. found out that her human avatar is based on the Stark Industries test pilot Edith Marks.

That revealed that all the AIs have a human avatar based on a real person that existed perhaps years before they came to be. VisionQuest episode 7 confirmed who Bettany’s Vision based his human avatar on after years of the character turning into human form in Avengers movies and more without any knowledge of his subconscious tie to said person. As Vision searched the depths of his code, he unearthed his connection to scientist Phineas Horton, who was played by Bettany, aged up through makeup, and J.I.M., Marvel Comics’ first Human Torch — Jim Hammond — and known as the Synthetic Man in the MCU.

Based on those details, it is safe to assume that whoever The Client’s identity might be, the new character that Spader is playing in the MCU is the human that serves as the basis for Ultron’s avatar, which explains why Marvel turned to the actor to pull double duty. For now, we have only seen a little of Spader’s new Marvel character, but based on how he lives in a mansion, has access to advanced technology, put out many contracts for bounty hunters to kidnap Vision, and unceremoniously told his security team to blow up Paladin’s van, he is not someone to be messed with.

As such, it seems like Spader is pulling double duty not only in terms of playing two MCU characters, but also with both being set up as Marvel villains. It is interesting timing, though, as Ultron seemed to be against Jocasta’s plan to enslave humanity and even covered for F.R.I.D.A.Y. when she hid inside Jocasta’s mind. Perhaps meeting his human avatar and realizing how he is nothing like him helps Ultron side with the good guys. It remains to be seen how Spader’s new MCU role will impact VisionQuest‘s finale next week, but The Client is likely to be front and center.
