Marquette Women’s Basketball Signs Amina Traore

Look, announcing a newly signed player for your upcoming season on the day that classes start is just deeply funny, okay?

ANYWAY, Cara Conseugra has a new Golden Eagle on her Marquette women’s basketball roster for 2026-27, as MU announced the signing of Amina Traore at 10am Central time on Monday, the first day of classes for fall semester.

Traore is a 6’2″ center from Paris, and yes, I mean the one in France, not the one in Kenosha County.

Here’s what Consuegra said in the press release:

“Amina brings a unique combination of physicality, versatility and experience that will make an immediate impact on our program,” Consuegra said. “She has competed at a high level in France against a variety of styles and competition, and that experience shows in her maturity, adaptability and understanding of the game. She has the ability to anchor the paint defensively, switch onto perimeter players and stretch the floor offensively, which gives us tremendous flexibility on both ends of the court. Just as importantly, Amina is a team-first player who values winning, embraces her role and elevates those around her. Her competitive spirit, work ethic and commitment to her teammates align perfectly with the culture we’re building at Marquette, and we’re excited to see her continue to grow in our program.”

Seems very positive…. what’s this in the next two paragraphs?

Traore has developed into a versatile frontcourt player capable of impacting both ends of the floor. She most recently appeared in 21 games for Monaco BA during the 2025-26 LF2 season, averaging 2.8 points and 2.3 rebounds in nine minutes per game.

In addition to her club experience, Traore has represented France in international competition. She competed for France at the 2023 FIBA U19 Women’s Basketball World Cup, averaging 3.9 rebounds per game across seven contests, after helping France at the 2022 FIBA U18 Women’s European Championship, where she averaged 6.3 points and 5.3 rebounds per game.

Less than 10 minutes a game in France’s second division, huh? And she was born in February 2004, which means that she’s already 22? I think this sounds an awful lot like we shouldn’t expect much from Traore this season, but I guess we have to acknowledge that she’s matching Noelle Anthon as the tallest player on the team. That has to count for something, right?

Is it bad that Marquette’s roster page for Amina Traore is currently listing her eligibility class as “Redshirt” when that’s not a thing any more under the five years/five seasons eligibility rules? Based on those rules, Traore is a senior with two seasons of eligibility remaining, as the school years where she turned 20, 21, and 22 have already passed.

I guess we’ll have to wait for November to see what any of this means for the Golden Eagles on the court as Conseugra starts Year Three in charge while searching for her first NCAA tournament appearance as MU’s head coach.

There’s still three open roster spots for this season after Traore is added in, and with just Jordan Meulemans running out of eligibility this year and Haylie Dulas committed for 2027-28, there’s three spots open next year, too. This isn’t the biggest problem because it’s hard to figure out playing time for 12 women….. but 2026-27 is Cara Consuegra resetting her roster after a not very good 2025-26 season. Let’s hope that Consuegra doesn’t find herself having to have hard conversations about her roster seven months from now.
