Margaretville stuns E/M in overtime for Class D title; Greene wins in Class C

SIDNEY – Mackenzie Hubbell scored twice, including the golden goal in double overtime, as No. 4 seeded Margaretville won its first section title in girls soccer since 2002 with a 2-1 win over second-seeded Edmeston/Morris on Friday, Oct. 30, in the Section IV Class D girls soccer finals.

“Very stunning,” Margaretville Coach Julie Marks said. “It is really all about heart. I think we surprised a lot of people. It came down to we believe that we can, and these kids showed up every day with a lot of heart. In the end, when you are evenly matched in soccer that is what it comes down to, and they proved it tonight.”

The Blue Devils finished second in the Delaware League this season, but upset champion Charlotte Valley/Schenevus, the top seed, in the section semifinals. They trailed Edmeston/Morris for nearly 40 minutes Friday, but their defense kept them in the game.

E/M took the lead with 16:13 left in the first half when Brenna Bolton finished off an Elle Nichols corner kick.

Twice Devil defenders made late clears of balls that appeared to be going in, although the first time led to the corner kick and score.

And at least one shot late in regulation by E/M’s Sophie Robinson seemed to cross the line, but no goal was awarded.

On offense Margaretville had four shots but took advantage.

Hubbell tied the game with 10:42 remaining in regulation on an assist from Xandria Gavette.

E/M had multiple corner kicks in both overtimes.

Margaretville had a couple of chances on restarts and finally send one into the net with 2:28 left in the final overtime.

River Williams had a restart from just outside the box. She chipped the ball into the crowd in front of the goal, where Gavette headed it to Hubbell, who finished to her left.

Marks said her defense has led the team all season.

“We have three seniors playing that back row this year, and they have taken on that leadership role,” she said. “They put in on the field, they put it in practice. We talked in the semifinals about how I thought it was a game that could be won on defense, and they have shown up twice now, coming up big in games.”
