Marcus Mariota voted FedEx Air Player of the Week after clutch performance

· · 2 min read

Washington Commanders backup quarterback Marcus Mariota has officially been voted the FedEx Air Player of the Week following his stellar outing in relief of the injured Jayden Daniels.

When Daniels went down in Week 2 vs the Cowboys, plenty of burgundy and gold faithful held their breath. While the timeline for Jayden’s return to the field remains uncertain, Mariota showed everyone why having a battle-tested veteran in the quarterback room is worth its weight in gold. He didn’t just keep the ship afloat—he steered the offense with complete command and poise from the opening drive to the final whistle against the Seahawks.

Mariota delivered a crisp, ruthlessly efficient afternoon through the air, finishing with 19 completions for 183 yards, 3 touchdowns, and zero turnovers, good for an eye-popping 110.0 passer rating. He distributed the ball with rhythm, made smart reads, and protected possession against a defense eager to feast on a backup.

Yet for all his sharp throws into the end zone, Mariota’s biggest moment of the afternoon came on the ground. Clinging to a tight lead late in the fourth quarter, Washington faced a key 3rd down with the game hanging in the balance. On a zone read play, Mariota trusted his legs; he kept the ball, diving between 2 defenders, each of whom had been blocked by TE John Bates, to convert the first down—effectively icing the victory. The value of that kind of veteran savvy and situational awareness is impossible to overstate.

With the fan vote locked in, Mariota takes home an honor that Commanders fans are becoming happily accustomed to seeing in D.C. The last Washington player to take home FedEx Air Player of the Week honors was Jayden Daniels himself, who brought home the award three separate times during his electrifying rookie campaign in 2024.

Congratulations to Marcus on a well-deserved recognition!
