Maple Leafs linked to Hurricanes for 24-year-old D-man Alexander Nikishin

The Toronto Maple Leafs have been connected to another young defenseman as speculation grows around Carolina Hurricanes blueliner Alexander Nikishin.

NHL analyst Darren Dreger reported that Carolina is actively evaluating its options with the 24-year-old restricted free agent.

“Multiple teams have confirmed Carolina is considering trade involving Alexander Nikishin,” Dreger posted on X. “The 24 year old Stanley Cup champion is a pending RFA, so the Canes are weighing trade interest vs extension.”

That report soon prompted discussion around Toronto’s potential involvement.

Writer Rachel Kryshak responded, “Wonder if Toronto calls on this. Knies is cost controlled, while Nikishin is not. Nikishin is also exactly the type of defender than Toronto needs.”

The timing makes sense. Toronto’s defense was a major weakness during its disastrous 2025-26 season. The Maple Leafs finished last in the Atlantic Division and ranked 31st in goals against after allowing 299 goals.

New general manager John Chayka has already begun a significant overhaul of the blue line. Trades for Emil Andrae and Darren Raddysh signaled a clear effort to improve mobility and puck movement.

Would Alexander Nikishin be worth the cost for the Maple Leafs?

Nikishin’s value has never been higher.

The rookie defenseman recorded 11 goals and 33 points in 81 games while helping Carolina capture the Stanley Cup. His 11 goals established a franchise record for a rookie defenseman, and he earned a place on the NHL All-Rookie Team.

At 24, Nikishin fits Toronto’s timeline better than many veteran options. He brings size (stands 6′ 4″), physicality, and strong transition play, all areas where the Leafs struggled last season.

The challenge is the acquisition cost.

One name that naturally enters the conversation is Matthew Knies. The 23-year-old winger is signed on a 6-year, $46.5 million contract, and remains one of Toronto’s most valuable young assets. Knies scored 23 goals and 43 points in 79 games last season despite the team’s collapse.

So, trading Knies for Nikishin would create a difficult debate. Toronto desperately needs top-pair defense talent, but power forwards with Knies’ age and production are equally difficult to replace.

Still, Chayka has made it clear that no option is off the table. With nearly $19 million in cap space and a mandate to reshape the roster, Toronto is expected to explore every opportunity to upgrade its defense.

Nikishin appears to be exactly the type of player who would attract serious interest.
